Elijah — God’s Mountain Man: During the Ninth Century B.C.E, the Prophet Elijah bursts on the scene of Israel’s life completely unexpected, uncredentialed, and uninvited. The Old Testament scholar Bernard Anderson says, “Elijah the Tishbite…suddenly appears like a meteor.” He breaks forth to speak a bold word to King Ahab of Israel and to many of the people whose faith was wavering.
For five weeks, beginning on Sunday, February 2, our worship services will focus on this unexpected prophet and the stories of his life and ministry. Each of the first four weeks, the preacher will focus on one of the Elijah stories. Then on the last week, the Chancel Choir will be singing portions of Felix Mendelssohn’s incredible oratorio “Elijah.”
The following is our schedule.
February 2: 1 Kings 17:8–24 — “Mamba Mentality” — Preacher: Ron Shive
February 9: 1 Kings 19:20–39 — “Showdown on Mt. Carmel” — Preacher: Ron Shive
