The Book of Genesis describes stories that give understanding to God’s beginnings with the human race and ultimately with a people who would carry the responsibility of bringing light to all the nations of the world. These stories were not compiled and edited until the time of the Persian Empire in the 6th Century B.C.E. It was a time when the Israelites were dreaming of a new beginning in Jerusalem after 50 years of exile in Babylon. These Genesis stories served as an inspiration to those seeking and yearning for a new beginning in Jerusalem. They were praying that the God who began it all could now begin a new chapter in their lives.

These stories can also serve as stories that will stretch our imagination as we think of staking out new beginnings in our lives.
