Joyously Returning

As we begin a new year together, we want to invite you, and even nudge you, to make in-person worship a regular part of your Sunday morning schedule once again. There is a significant difference between worshiping alone and worshiping in community with others. We as individuals are suffering emotionally, physically, and spiritually from being alone and in isolation from the rich diversity of one another. We as a church are also struggling in the absence of our togetherness.

The psalmist is so, so right when he says, “Behold how good and how pleasant it is when brothers and sisters dwell together in unity.” The preacher of Ecclesiastes is so wise when he says, “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up the other; but woe to one who is alone and falls and does not have another to help.”

As a church, a vital part of being community with one another begins with our corporate worship and group study of scripture on Sunday morning. Most all of us are taking the careful risks of going to school and work, eating at restaurants, going to football games, and taking trips. It is time we begin taking the careful risk of gathering together again.

Beginning on Sunday, January 9, we will return to our “Pre-Pandemic” Sunday morning schedule:

    • 8:30 a.m. — Corporate Worship — in Williams Chapel
    • 9:15–9:45 a.m. — Coffee Fellowship in the Welcome Center
    • 9:45–10:45 a.m. — Children’s and Adult Classes
    • 11:00 a.m. — Corporate Worship — in the Sanctuary

From January 2–February 20, we will have a worship series that will focus on the book of Philippians and the joy of our life in Christ together. During this period we will have a Congregational Book Read. We will be reading together Tom Are, Jr.’s book Joy Even on Your Worst Days: Wisdom from Philippians. Tom is the Senior Pastor of the Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village, Kansas. He is no stranger to FPC, because he has been one of our preachers and teachers for the Pritchett Symposium. He is not only one of the best preachers in the country, but is a thoughtful and inspiring author. Copies of the book are available for purchase following worship each Sunday. Copies are also available outside the church office during the week.

We also want to invite you to join the Sunday preacher for a 12:15 p.m. Post-Worship Coffee and Conversation about the sermon and the corresponding chapter in Dr. Are’s book. This will begin on Sunday, January 2. This discussion will take place in the Witherspoon Room.
